Visitors to Dubai this month have the rare opportunity to swim around one of the world's most famous luxury hotels, the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah. A short distance from the city's coastline, the iconic sail-shaped tower (the fourth tallest in the world) perches on an artificial island in the blue waters of the Arabian Gulf.  Making the 800-metre swim around the island is normally impossible due to the high levels of boat traffic, not to mention strong currents. But registration has opened for the 13th annual Dubai Holding Burj Al Arab Swim on March 31, which will see the waters around the hotel boat-free and safely watched by lifeguards. The race is open to swimmers of all abilities above the age of 16, who will be able to take part in either 800-metre or 1,600-metre race categories.
